About Our program

Our program is available to student-athletes in grades 6-12 who are looking to take control of their development. Working with Edmentum Academics, we create a fully customized, NCAA-accredited online academic experience for students. Students not only advance their education but learn organization and study skills, and how to adapt their own learning style.

Our academic platform allows our student-athletes the flexibility to learn at their own pace, while amplifying the amount of support and resources available. In Detroit, all student-athletes spend approximately 20 hours per week dedicated to academics. The classes are all taught by state certified teachers virtually through the Edmentum platform. On-site our student-athletes are supported by our Director of Academics, our Success Coaches, and Edmentum’s virtual tutors.

The EdOptions Academy course library provides our student-athlete with access to take NCAA Approved Core classes, AP Level courses, and over 200 possible electives which include foreign languages, arts, and more. Our academic platform is Cognia accredited and all graduating student-athletes will receive a private school diploma issued by our state partner.

In Detroit, our student-athletes Study, Train and Play every day. Each week, our student-athletes have:

  • 20 hours of dedicated on-site academic time
  • 10 hours of sport-specific training

A typical day starts with a morning meeting, followed by a dynamic warm-ups and and then sport-specific skill training. After students eat lunch together it's time for school. Our brand new state-of-the-art facilities provide our students with a mini-campus style setup that creates and ideal learning environment, with a multiple learning spaces. Most importantly our on-site staff is always available to provide support.

Frequently Asked Questions

The TPH Center of Excellence is NOT a team. We are a school that allows you to focus on your individual skills. Additionally, you can still play for your current team. This makes for an awesome training environment where our student-athletes get to build a community with like-minded individuals.

At the TPH Center of Excellence our student-athletes benefit from multiple layers of support. At the foundation is their TPH-focused Edmentum teachers, students have access to virtual tutors, and our Center of Excellence has a Director of Academics and Success Coach(es) on-site every day to ensure student-athletes stay on task, help them find the resources they need, and help cultivate an environment conducive to learning.

Our student-athletes train roughly 4-5 hours/week with 2SP Sports Performance in a facility connected to our academic space.

DID YOU KNOW: student-athletes can receive physical education credit for the training.

They are certainly welcome to, but we do offer a meal plan working with the restaurant, Ice Sports Cafe in the Detroit Skating Club (DSC) to offer healthy and delicious options at an affordable price.

Our firm but flexible approach is one of the primary benefits of the TPH Center of Excellence. Traditional schooling is not conducive to the lifestyle of the aspiring elite student-athlete. We are very flexible with our attendance policy because we do understand the travel that sports require and the toll that a season can take on a student-athlete. The beauty of our platform is that we can operate virtually. Need a recovery day? Stay home, you can do you course work from home, our staff can additionally send you a home workout. The biggest factor is that we believe our student-athletes get the most out of their experience by attending on-site, but we understand that may not always be possible.

The goal of our mentorship program is to educate our student-athletes on “the process” of becoming elite. Part of that is through the mentorship program which includes Coach FA's Mentorship Program, community service, field trips, and guest speakers.

We believe the TPH Center of Excellence provides more balance than traditional school. Our student-athletes finish a day at the Center of Excellence, attend their club's practice, and then are free the rest of the day. We believe our platform gives our student-athletes more time to spend as they wish away from the Center of Excellence. Additionally we require our student-athletes to fill out daily surveys through Kinduct that help our staff understand the holistic state of our student-athletes. These surveys track sleep, nutrition, injuries, and more to assist us in ensuring we know how to balance their workload.

The TPH Center of Excellence can provide support for IEP's and 504's. We have built our centers with learning environments that help all types of learners and set up our student-athletes for success. However, students will have to complete a determination meeting with our education partner to ensure we can meet all the needs of the student.

Our staff arrives to the Center of Excellence at 7:30 a.m.. Students typically arrive at 8 a.m. and are done anywhere between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

No need to transfer, our platform can follow student-athletes where ever they go. Student-athletes that make the jump to the next level will find that our academics are very supportive to the schedule of a junior hockey player. Additionally our academic staff will provide the same support they provide all our student-athletes, just virtually.

If our full academy model is not for you, we do offer the opportunity to train on and off the ice with our athletic staff. To inquire about the Train only program, please fill out the "Connect With Our Staff" form.
